This is the largest of the five comparisons: 11,028 answers per engine from four projects tracked by Archipel in Peec AI, the same questions asked to ChatGPT and Gemini.
ChatGPT cites a source in 96.3% of answers and 3.8 sources per answer. Gemini cites a source in only 68.4% and 2.5 sources per answer: it often answers without naming where its information comes from.
When they cite, Gemini leans more on rankings: 60.0% of its sources against 48.5% for ChatGPT. Duels use Peec AI data: identical questions asked to both engines over the same period. Figures can differ from the engine pages, which use larger Profound samples.
For a brand, Gemini rewards being known (it often answers from memory) and being in the lists it does cite. ChatGPT gives more room to sources overall.
Method
406,626 AI answers collected every day from July 12, 2026 to October 11, 2026 on over 1,700 purchase-intent questions tracked by Archipel (mostly in French, plus the United States and the Netherlands). ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot: Profound data. Claude and Gemini: Peec AI data. Sources are classified automatically from their address and title.
