This comparison asks ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews the same buying questions: 3,658 answers per engine from three projects tracked by Archipel in Peec AI.
ChatGPT cites a source in 96.2% of answers, AI Overviews in 73.6%. AI Overviews cites more sources per answer (4.2 against 3.1). Rankings weigh more for ChatGPT: 45.3% of its sources against 35.4% for AI Overviews, which spreads its citations across brand pages and YouTube.
Across the full Observatory (Profound data), AI Overviews cites 8.0 sources per answer and a source in 95.1% of answers; the gap with this sample reflects a different tool and question set. Duels use Peec AI data: identical questions asked to both engines over the same period. Figures can differ from the engine pages, which use larger Profound samples.
For a brand, the two engines call for slightly different plans: rankings and a citable site for ChatGPT, plus video and deep pages for Google AI Overviews.

406,626 AI answers collected every day from July 12, 2026 to October 11, 2026 on over 1,700 purchase-intent questions tracked by Archipel (mostly in French, plus the United States and the Netherlands). ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot: Profound data. Claude and Gemini: Peec AI data. Sources are classified automatically from their address and title.
